Supervisor, Municipal Fleet Maintenance

Reporting to the Director of Municipal Fleet Maintenance in the Fleet & Facility Services Branch, each Supervisor will be responsible for a separate facility that supports the municipal and emergency services’ fleets. The workforce is comprised of Forepersons, trades personnel, and administrative support staff.

Specific responsibilities include:
Manage the human and physical resources required to perform preventative maintenance on a varied fleet of light and heavy vehicles, fire apparatus, ambulances and equipment by planning workloads and forecasting manpower requirements
Provide leadership, mentoring, coaching and direction to trades and non-trades employees
Ensure staff are trained and competent to perform their duties
Collaborate with management, human resources, unions, engineering, planning and customers to coordinate work activities, solve issues and maintain optimal performance
Organize staff and budget to support capital build projects for internal and external clients
Support vehicle maintenance and repair requirements as the lead client representative
Administer overhaul programs, shop safety programs and determining training requirements for staff
Oversee road/emergency services, preventative maintenance, maintenance repairs, shop and required maintenance, overhauls, servicing of a diverse fleet Manage a total annual operating budget of approximately $10+ million
Maintain communication with the unions and working together to proactively manage labour relation issues
Provide AssetWorks™ M5 reports to various external and internal client groups Identify areas for process or productivity improvement and implementing change where justified
Ensure service is performed in a safe, environmentally and financially responsible manner, meeting service and client standards
Represent Fleet Services with clients to ensure service levels meet customer needs, planning adequate resources
Oversee planning to ensure adequate parts, tools and facilities are in place to provide optimal service
Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications :
Journeyperson certificate in the trade of Heavy Duty, Automotive Mechanic or Auto Body Mechanic supplemented by formal training in supervision and management. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered
Certified Public Fleet Professional and/or Canadian Institute of Management designation is an asset
7 years progressively responsible experience in automotive and/or heavy duty equipment repairs and maintenance, and within a front-line leadership role within a heavy duty equipment repair and maintenance facility
5 years experience at a leadership level with experience in the assessment and application of discipline in union labour matters, within a unionized environment
Demonstrated technical skills and ability to make judgment in diagnosing repair problems and carrying out repairs in a timely manner
Proven skills in the following areas: leadership in change management, strategic thinking, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written), priority setting, planning, conflict resolution, customer relations and negotiating
Strong understanding of performance measurement development and implementation in an operational environment
Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License or operator's licensing equivalent Applicants may be required to arrange their own transportation for work purposes. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance and where appropriate, will be reimbursed according to City policy
