The Organization

Since its inception in 1928, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has governed the Métis within Alberta. The Opportunity

Métis Crossing is the first major Métis cultural interpretive center in Alberta. Métis Crossing endeavours to preserve, strengthen, and promote the cultural heritage of Alberta's Metis people. Reflective of our communities and cultural landscapes, programming is based on research, collection, and presentation of Metis traditions, lifeways, and cultural artifacts. We strive to incorporate a continuum of Métis achievement, both historical and contemporary.

Métis Crossing seeks applicants for the position of “Kitchen Helper/Dishwasher & Servers”. The successful applicant will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing all dishware, pots, pans, and utensils, ensuring work areas and clean and sanitized including sweeping, mopping, and wiping counters, and have experience with commercial electric dishwashers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate dishwashers to clean pots, pans, utensils, and silverware.
  • Keep dishwasher in clean condition.
  • Pre-wash and scrub pots and pans.
  • Store and organize clean pots, pans, and silverware.
  • Monitor and ensure all chemicals used for cleaning and sanitizing are at proper levels.
  • General cleaning duties including taking out the trash, sweeping, mopping, and keeping the dishwashing area clean and organized.
  • Serve food and beverages to guests.
  • Set up buffets.
  • Set tables and clean tables/seating areas.
  • Wipe down and sanitize food areas.
  • Use and wear equipment, devices, and clothing required by Métis Crossing and in compliance with OHS.
  • Report any issues or defective equipment.
  • Adhere to WHMIS at all times.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences of varying cultural backgrounds and ages.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in schedule and assignments.
  • Attention to details.
  • Able to work both independently and with others in a team, as well as take direction from others.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work in a noisy, fast paced, multitasking environment.
  • Must be able to life up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a physical demanding area, including standing for the duration of shifts.

Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of food service requirements.
  • Previous experience as a Kitchen Helper or Dishwasher.
  • Previous experience as a server.
  • WHMIS and basic First Aid.
  • Knowledge and adherence to safe and sanitary food handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of Alberta history and cultural diversity.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Métis.

Other Requirements

  • Availability to work a mixed schedule of days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work at Métis Crossing in Smoky Lake.
  • Must be returning to school full-time in fall 2020.
  • Must provide Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to hire.

Employment Details

  • Schedule will be based on a 40 hour work week, and will include weekdays, weekends, and holiday.
