Job Description:

Sun Life’s Client Experience Office (CXO) area is aggressively enhancing its member insights capability with new tools, and most importantly, new talent. As a member of the CXO Analytics team, you will play a pivotal role in working closely with our business partners to enable digital engagement, predictive modelling, business intelligence and deep dive analytics to understand our client needs in new ways, and ultimately enable a leading client experience. As Data Engineer you will join a team that leverages our Big Data capabilities to enable various business objectives by ensuring there is a solid data foundation in place to support data mining, strategic insight and digital capability enablement. In joining CXO you will be part of one of the fastest growing areas of our business, representing the future of our business and our industry.

Given this mandate, the role requires an experienced data specialist (6+ years) with deep experience in data management, a solid understanding of the data needs of analytics and business and new technologies in the world of data. The candidates must have relevant experience in the following areas:

Data Management – i.e. design, development, production support
Knowledge on the data needs for various aspects of data and analytics
Communication and liaison experience between business, analytics and IT
Data discovery - i.e. scoping new data sources, understanding and leveraging current data sources

The successful candidate for the role will be a key player in our venture into “Big Data” as we operationalize our Big Data and Advanced Data Engineering environment on AWS.

Role Summary:
Maintain a large and complex SAS data repository that provides accurate and reliable data to support analytics, reporting and campaigns in support of digital channels.
Migrate SAS data processes to Python and Spark Processes with various technologies
Work intimately for building a data consumption layer working with business
Deepen the organizations understanding of client and member level data and provide expert guidance on how best to leverage data to provide actionable business insight.
Manage and execute on business data requests ensuring requests are aligned to business priorities and the request fulfillment meets the business needs.
Experience with demonstrating business values via PoC and promoting PoC to production
Collaborates in an agile team to understand business objectives and develop campaign solutions that deliver best in class, engaging and highly relevant experiences

Main Accountabilities

Provide expert guidance on developing the structure and processes to build a Big Data repository (includes basic ETL type processes, QA etc.).
Work as Product Owner of data products in agile methodology as per the business priority and migrate from SAS to AWS Big Data Environment
Assist in the initial build of the analytical data model (i.e. developing the SAS/SQL/HQL/Python/Spark/Scala code and data processes)
Develop and maintain metadata documentation
Manage, maintain and continuously improve the data model on an ongoing basis.
Productionize and run models, reports and campaign lists.
Help develop and align CXO data capabilities with Enterprise Analytics initiative roadmap
Liaison with IT to improve data processes and add new data as required
Become one of the organizations top data experts and CXO data steward ensuring data is appropriately interpreted and applied to business problems.
Assisting modelers with developing datasets for analyses.
Support campaign target list generation, analyses, measurement and reporting
Develop a solid understanding the Sun Life Financial Canada’s business
Manage and execute data requests ensuring requests are aligned to business priorities and the request fulfillment meets the business needs.

Competencies:
Solid communication skills – have the ability to explain complexity of data to a business audience and explain the complexity of business to the IT audience
Through knowledge and demonstrated experience in data management best practices (importing, cleaning, transforming, validating, quality and modeling data)
Expert in SQL programming and database development (mandatory 5+ years’ experience)
Intermediate SAS skills are required with knowledge of Macros
Intermediate HQL/Python/Spark Skills are required
Demonstrated experience in data preparation and querying and reporting
Demonstrated data modelling skills and experience
Additional professional development in various studies in information technology, business and Statistics
Adaptable - maintains effectiveness while managing competing demands, able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events
Organized, takes ownership to meet deadlines and commitments

Agile team members demonstrate strong past indicators to:
Maintain an ownership mentality
Quickly make decisions to accelerate data POCs to production
Drive execution from ideation, to development, through to execution
Collaborate with teammates to provide insight to business problems
Advocate for the client, leveraging insights that can drive meaningful marketing tactics

Assets

Strong programming in any other language and analytical skills
Knowledge of AWS Technologies, such as Redshift, Glue or similar
Experience working with agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban etc.)
Expert skills in both SAS and Python are highly preferred

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
