Job Description:

Successfully maintain all mechanical systems within the plant and provide assistance to the electrical technicians with repairs of electrical systems when required. Ability to use and operate all tools, maintenance and production equipment safely while performing these duties in an environmentally friendly manner, work in a team-oriented style with a mature problem-solving approach to provide a service, perform the required operational and safety inspections of the equipment as well as wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist other maintenance technicians and production employees on corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance issues for the facility.
  • Perform, repair and monitor work on mechanical equipment and components in all areas of the plant and grounds, including items such as; hydraulic systems, pneumatics, water lines, air lines, piping, pumps, valves, nozzles, shaker and belt conveyors, screw conveyors, roller conveyors, bucket elevators, bins, crushers, screening machines, spirals, stairs, ladders, overhead crane, hoists, pulleys and hooks, crane cables, electromagnets, scrap bucket, water cooled panels, the electric arc furnace transformer, electrode holder and masts, tundishes, slide gates, combustion and drive systems associated with gas fired-process equipment, gas-fired pre-heaters, packaging equipment, bag sealers, scales, chemical feed systems, bag house/dust collectors, and minor low voltage electrical repairs as required with use of proper testing. Must follow all lock-out procedures, ensuring the removal of “all energy” – kinetic and electric – before commencing with repairs.
  • Work as a team player to communicate the status of projects and repairs to supervisors and other maintenance/service personnel on a shift-to-shift basis.
  • Work with the Carl Software program to receive work orders and daily tasks
  • Maintain adequate spare parts inventory by reporting usage to maintenance supervision on a daily basis.
  • Work with tools and equipment of the trade including; hammers, wrenches, hydraulic jacks, presses, torches, welders, drills, saws, grinders, v-belts, lubrication equipment, solvents and paints required
  • Follow job and project lists as determined by the shift supervisor or maintenance manager.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and repairs according to the schedule – upgrade current operating equipment when needed.
  • Report all unsafe working conditions or equipment to supervision.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the preventive maintenance program for equipment in all areas of the plant by maintaining a constant awareness of potential problems or breakdown areas.
  • Work under the guidance of the production supervisor or team leader on off-shifts to enable the plant to continue to operate in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of area where work is performed and put all used tools or equipment in their proper storage areas.
  • Maintain good interpersonal working relationships with maintenance, production and management personnel to effectively communicate with them.
  • Record work performed properly and accurately on the “Maintenance Shift Report” located in the maintenance shop.
  • Enter PM information into the preventive maintenance computer database within the AS 400 system.
  • Adhere to the guidelines and rules in the company’s “Health and Safety Manual” located in the lunch room and in the production supervisor’s office.
  • Follow the area’s associated instructions provided in the “Work Instructions,” and the procedures detailed in the “Quality Management Procedures.”

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in an industrial or foundry environment.
  • Ontario College of Trades License 426A required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to withstand cold weather and high heat/humidity working conditions, and the odors associated with the steel-making process.
  • Must be able to work scheduled shifts including shift work, weekends and overtime when necessary.
  • Must be able to work at a minimum elevated height of 40 feet above the ground.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs, and traverse the grounds.
  • Must be able to bend and twist within confined spaces or close quarters.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform multiple tasks on a daily basis.
  • Must have vision at, or corrected to 20/40.
  • Must be able to withstand the radiant glare off of high temperature hot metal.
  • Must be able to withstand the radiant heat off of tempered product.
  • Must be able to comply with and wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Hours of Work

  • The hours of work may involve working 8-12 hour shifts on a rotating schedule. Occasional overtime may be required, however, hours of work will be subject to the statutory maximum hours of work and overtime as set out in the Employment Standards Act, and in Company Policy. The hours of work and work schedule may be amended from time to time.
