Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the HVAC Technician is primarily responsible for the efficient operations and maintenance to a variety of HVAC equipment including: air handling units, refrigeration equipment, motors, heating units, heat pumps, humidifiers intake and exhaust fans.
The position is deemed Safety Sensitive. This position requires the incumbent to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, team members, the public, property or the environment.
However, when the position is required to perform switching duties the position is deemed Safety Critical as it is directly engaged in the operation of trains. All team members are required pass a safety critical medical and undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada.
You will be responsible for…
Keeps all the HVAC equipment in safe and proper working condition
Completes HVAC work such as:
regular equipment inspections to verify HVAC equipment and systems are operating optimally and as per design intent
maintain and service chillers, heat pumps, air handling units, fans, humidifiers, pumps, VAV boxes, motors, refrigerators and freezers
monitor, troubleshoot, replace, calibrate and program HVAC controls
replace filters and belts
Maintains associated electrical and electronic controls on all rolling stock
Supports training initiatives within the HVAC and Refrigeration scope
Provides advice, support and leadership to team members, management and contractors for HVAC and Refrigeration systems
Reads, understands and interprets drawings to determine layout of HVAC and Refrigeration equipment installations
Updates documentation (drawings, specifications, O&M manuals, etc.) related to HVAC services.
Installs new services in renovation or building changes as determined by the Manager.
Generates ideas and recommends improve reliability, productivity and safety
Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains complex control circuits found in rail car HVAC systems
Recommends the ordering of HVAC supplies.
Responds to environment comfort complaints.
Performs log readings.
Performs minor repairs and installations including:
Replacing washers, faucets, sinks, clear toilets and drains, clean grease traps and sumps, re-pack valves and lamps.
Installation of wall and ceiling mounted accessories.
Completes preventive and demand maintenance tasks; enter maintenance records on work orders
Other duties as assigned; including non-HVAC related duties.
Ability to follow structured operation plan, empowered to make decisions and escalate defined risk
You will have...
Education / Certifications / Knowledge/ Medical & Drug Testing
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent including grammar, spelling, arithmetic, reading, writing and understanding English.
Computer literacy including MS Office and MS SharePoint 365
Completion of HVAC apprenticeship with a minimum 2 years related work experience as a certified trade is an asset
Trades Qualification (TQ): Certificate in Refrigeration, and in Plumbing with Gasfitter’s Certificate (Class C or B) plus two years related work experience after completion of TQ.
Valid B.C. Driver's License (Class 5) and clean driving record
Must pass a safety critical medical as prescribed by Transport Canada including a pre-employment drug test
First Aide Level 1 Certification is an asset
Experience in 120, 208, 240 and 480 volt AC systems
Preferred experience with heating and refrigeration related to commercial building and mobile equipment industries
Strong troubleshooting skill set
Hot gas bypass systems knowledge and experience
Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting HVAC equipment
Ability to communicate clearly in a friendly in a personable way with customers and coworkers.
Strong attention to detail with the desire to complete the job correctly the first time.
Qualification in safe CROR train switching experience is an asset
Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operation such as forklifts, cranes, etc.
Qualification and/or proven knowledge in safe small hand tool handling such as grinders, drills, etc.
Understands and is willingness to follow proper safety techniques.
A willingness to learn our other services & restorations we provide
Shift work consisting of scheduled hours with possibility of irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime
Work in a shop environment and outside in all weather conditions
Occasionally work in confined spaces and at elevated heights
Frequent stooping, lifting, kneeling, bending, crouching and climbing.
Travel to RM locations as necessary, to locations where skill set is required
