About the Role:

Our Residential Counsellors support clients attending our longer-term residential addiction treatment program in Guelph. Our approach to treatment is a group approach, based around peer support and mutual self help. Counsellors contribute to our clients' recovery journey by demonstrating positive and healthy behaviours (role modelling), engaging in supportive counselling, containment and crisis intervention, and participating alongside residents in community living activities (participating in mealtimes and outdoor recreation activities).

Stonehenge is one of only two funded Therapeutic Communities in Ontario. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in a career in social work or counselling to work in and learn about a unique model of treatment.

This position will require a commitment of 4 shifts per month (at minimum), primarily over the weekends and to cover holidays. Our Counsellors must have availability to work days or afternoons and overnight shifts (as needed) on the weekend. Availability to work "on call" shifts also required, in addition to scheduled shifts.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Supervise residents in daily activities as well as monitoring outings
  • Monitor the treatment centre during evenings and overnights, in the absence of full-time staff
  • Interact with residents consistent with individual treatment needs and treatment plans
  • Lead and participate in programs
  • Perform light housekeeping chores including laundry, clean staff offices, etc.
  • Facilitate crisis intervention and supportive counseling/containment
  • Facilitate recreational and psycho-educational program areas in a therapeutic community context
  • Make referrals to internal and/or external programs or services, as appropriate
  • Attend all mandatory training programs and monthly team meetings
  • Complete required documentation such as the Communication Log, program notes and Incident Reports
  • Liaise and support full-time staff
  • Prepare for and attend regularly scheduled clinical supervisions


  • Enrollment in or completion of a College Diploma or University Degree program, related to social services required
  • Previous experience in the field of addictions and the residential treatment preferred
  • Lived experience related to addictions and/or mental health an asset
  • Must live within 1 hour of Guelph
  • Valid G Driver’s License for a minimum of 3 years (G2 level or higher), and own/reliable vehicle (not on a bus route/rural setting)
  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record
  • CSC Clearance conducted by PWGS Canada
  • Standard First Aid/CPR Level C
