What responsibilities will you have in this role?
Reporting to the Director, Student Engagement & Career Success, the Manager, Career Planning & Development plays a key role in George Brown College’s strategic priority to prepare students for a successful transition from college to career,supported by an ongoing process of career planning and personal development. Responsible for leadership and strategic direction of career development programming and services at George Brown College, the Manager develops and facilitates the implementation of operational and strategic plans to ensure that all Career Planning & Development teams meet and achieve the departmental goals and objectives aligned with the Colleges Strategy for 2022 and Vision 2030.
The Manager Career Planning & Development works pro-actively and collaboratively with academic divisions, industry liaison/co-op offices, Work-Integrated Learning, student services across the College, employers and other external partners, to effectively lead, implement and assess the delivery of responsive and tailored services that positively impact student retention, success, and graduate employment across all academic divisions. The incumbent also leads the design and development of new initiatives internally with divisional areas, and externally with community and industry partners, including sourcing funding and sponsorship opportunities.
Provides leadership and strategic direction for career development programming and services through Career Planning & Development for students and areas across the College.
Aligns programs and services with the College’s Human Skills Framework and student experience model, employer liaison and relationship development, researching labor market trends, designing student-focused service delivery, and using technology effectively in service delivery.
Strategizes and determines most effective models based on client needs and divisional goals.
Develops and facilitiates the implementation of plans that are coordinated and aligned across the College.
Leads Career Planning & Development team to high performance, inlcuding effectively hiring as needed and staffing all centers, guiding staff in professional development.
Trains and allocates resources effectively, mentors staff in effective teamwork, and manageshuman resource challenges as they arise.
Ensures service team performance exemplifies excellence in career development service delivery.
Directs and oversees marketing, outreach, and relationship-buliding internally and externally to promote awareness and encourage use of the services.
Builds the Career Planning & Development brand; sources sponsorship and partnership opportunities for Career Planning & Development growth and development.
Negotiates effective relationships to ensure Career Planning & Development services are in demand across the College, and externally, are the partner of choice for employers.
Provides strategic leadership and direction for all tools and resources used in advancing student career development and employment attainment, including the online job posting system (currently “GBCareeers”), employer database, student handbooks, scheduling and data collection systems, ePortfolio, interview, and resume, etc. software/platforms.
Ensures evidence-based practice through regular data collection and analysis of service impacts, outcomes and client satisfaction.
Disemminates evaluative information to clients and ensures staff understand and use evidence to inform practice.
Other related duties as assigned.
What qualifications do you need for this role?
Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Counselling, Psychology, Education, Business Administration, Human Resources or a related field Is required.
Minimum seven years’ experience in a progressive leadership role in Career Planning and Development or Human Resources, with experience leading teams is required.
Knowledge of the future of skills and work, industry diversity, measurement and evaluation of outcomes relating to career planning & development.
Experience initiating, developing and maintaining partnerships, relationships and regular contacts with College management, other colleges and other local public sector organizations to foster collaborative and innovative approaches to systems planning.
Project/operational management, organizational development, time management skills.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
A thorough knowledge of a student information system; excellent computer application skills.
Comprehensive knowledge of policies and procedures relating to the College.
Expert in developing multi-year strategic plans and yearly business plans, customer service, project management and coaching and mentoring.
Experience in business process re-engineering and implementing and/or improving systems to support business requirements.
Experience analyzing data and statistical information in order to forecast and project future costs.
Extensive Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office coordinating and implementing projects and improve electronic processes and procedures.
Advanced oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, to understand and articulate business requirements and work effectively with staff at all levels across the organization as well as vendors and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated experience in coordinating/leading projects, including designing or re-designing business processes, sub processes and implementing changes according to deadlines and budget.
Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.
Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
