We are currently seeking to expand our pool of Relief Transitional Support Workers at My Sisters’ Place. Working varying hours in our Day, Evening, and Weekend Programs, Relief staff perform duties and responsibilities consistent with providing a safe and welcoming environment to women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This role is eligible for optional enrollment into the Health Care of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).

Experience working with women who live with multiple challenges including mental illness, marginalization, poverty, woman abuse/trauma, homelessness and substance abuse is an asset and a university degree or college diploma in social services or a related field, or working towards completion is necessary to perform the duties required. While Relief staff have flexibility in choosing shifts that suit their schedules up to a maximum of 44 hours per week; a commitment to accepting a minimum four shifts per month is required to remain on the Relief list.

Successful candidates must have a Police Vulnerable Sector Check completed in the last six months. In order to avoid delays in beginning a position, interested applicants who reside in the City of Londonand are in need of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) are encouraged to apply for one as soon as possible as PVSCs in the City of London are currently taking approximately 5 weeks to be delivered and offers of employment cannot be made without receipt of a PVSC.

Relief staff are eligible to apply for internal postings after completing three months in their Relief role.

Job Description and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide a welcoming, safe, and trusting environment to support clients
  • Identify/respond to the concerns of women with serious mental illness, substance abuse, trauma and/or homelessness
  • Engage with clients in identifying and developing personal capacities leading to self-advocacy
  • Work with clients and help motivate/support them to work towards achievement of their goals
  • Assist clients in linking, liaising/connecting with appropriate community resources
  • Assist with programming needs as necessary and in a timely manner
  • Responsible for logging and statistical gathering as required
  • Documentation as required
  • Crisis intervention, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Identify, promote resolution and management of all emergency situations concerning clients, staff and property
  • Make decisions both independently and collaboratively
  • Ensure effective communication with Director, staff team, and any partner agencies, and community services
  • Advocate for and support clients in accessing community resources
  • Provide assistance where required
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Specifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (university/community college) in social services or related field
  • Knowledge of London and area community services and resources applicable for this client population
  • Post-secondary education (university/community college) in social services or related field
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to problem solve in situations of high stress
  • Demonstrated ability to work with women who live with multiple challenges related to serious mental illness, marginalization, poverty, woman abuse/trauma, homelessness and substance abuse
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Current, clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Ability to attend work regularly
