Coast Mental Health (Coast) is one of the largest mental health non-profit societies in Canada, and operates a large array of innovative housing and community based rehabilitation services for people with a mental illness living in and around Vancouver. Coast operates in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia providing approximately 1000 people with supportive housing and 4000 clients living in the community with a wide variety of programs and services.
Coast fosters a client-driven, recovery-oriented environment that promotes restoring health, personal growth and a return to society for individuals with a mental illness through advocacy and providing direct programs and services.
This program helps people transition from the criminal justice system back into their communities. The program’s methodology is designed to equip residents to reintegrate into society with a low risk of reoffending. Staff works closely with treatment teams from Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, forensic clinics, and other care providers in all aspects of case management.
A Transitional Worker in the Cottages grogram works 7.5 hr shifts with a 0.5 hr paid meal break. The shifts are:
7:00 – 15:00
15:00 – 23:00
23:00 – 7:00
Transitional workers provide mental health supports for clients in these programs, using the psychosocial rehabilitation approach.
Work in forensic cottages is focused on engaging the residents in daily life skills activities such as cooking and cleaning, as well as promoting independence in areas such as self medication administration and independent and/or supported housing. You will further identify and support residents to access community resources and services.
University degree or diploma in Mental Health & Addictions or a combination of a Mental Health Worker certificate/ life skills certificate with 3 years experience in the human service field with at least 1 year being in community mental health are required.
You must have a valid First Aid Certificate ("Emergency First Aid - Community Care" or equivalent), a Ministry of Justice Criminal Records Clearance, Foodsafe, WHMIS and a valid B.C. Driver’s License have access to a reliable vehicle. Successful applicants are subject to approval of FPI Director.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to work with people with a mental illness and addictions
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients.
- Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients.
- Demonstrated ability to implement psychosocial rehabilitation framework and strength-based, recovery-oriented techniques
- Knowledge of trauma – informed care.
- Knowledge of and ability to implement techniques related to concurrent disorders (mental illness and addiction), including motivation enhancement techniques and harm reduction
- Knowledge of and ability to work with a culturally diverse group of clients
- Knowledge of housing issues and community resources in Metro Vancouver.
- Ability and willingness to understand and work with adults who have been found not criminally responsible for a criminal offense by reason of a mental disorder.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system
- Ability to effectively organize work and prioritize
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
