Job Summary: Under the direction and guidance of the Director of Training and Social Enterprises, the Social Enterprise Lead supervises and leads Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store Team and Aunt Leah’s Tree Lot team. The Lead is expected to work collaboratively as a team member to achieve strategic organizational objectives. The expectation of the Social Enterprise Lead is to expand, develop and grow the social enterprises, and move them into further financial sustainability. This role requires someone who can network, communicate, and develop relationships with community members while developing action plans and seeing them through.

We have an exciting new leadership opportunity for a talented Social Enterprise Lead. This is a full time regular position.

The Social Enterprise Lead is responsible for all aspects of Aunt Leah’s Christmas Tree Lot, Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store and Aunt Leah’s Donations Center.

About Aunt Leah’s Christmas Tree Lot

For 25 years Aunt Leah’s Christmas Tree Lots have been raising money to fund programs that help prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless, and young mothers from losing custody of their children. Currently there are 6 tree lot locations. Last year we raised over $500,000, thanks to generous community members, sponsors, and volunteers. This Christmas season join the tradition and help give kids a home.

About Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store

Aunt Leah’s Thrift store features quality “pre-loved”/gently used clothing and accessories. We also carry a variety of small furniture and household items. All the profits raised go towards preventing homelessness in youth from foster care, and supporting young mothers in need. In addition, Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store provides employment and training opportunities for youth in and from foster care and mothers in need as well as provides a warm and caring “shopping” experience for youth and families in need in order to provide free furniture, household and clothing items.

About Aunt Leah’s Donations Centre

Aunt Leah’s Donations Centre receives, sorts and stores donated goods that are used by Aunt Leah’s Programming, provided to program participants to furnish their new or first homes or are sold at Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store. The Donations Centre provides employment and training opportunities for youth in and from foster care and mothers in need as well as provides a warm and caring “shopping” experience for youth and families in need in order to provide free furniture, household and clothing items.

Reports To: Director of Training and Social Enterprises

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in business or social service management
  • An undergraduate degree in business or humanities or a related discipline, and/or a relevant combination of education and experience.

· Experience in business management, e.g. running a small business; strong entrepreneurial drive

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

The Lead is expected to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of social enterprise, events, and functions. The Lead works primarily at the Vancouver Office and is often at the offsite locations. Specific accountabilities include: monitoring of services, verifying service outcomes, identifying issues for resolution and proactively resolving complaints or concerns.

1. Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store and Donation Centre

· Reviews and updates business plan considering expansion and growth of Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store

· Supervises all Thrift Store and Donation Centre staff

· Holds regular staff meeting and ensures business plan is followed

· Ensures metrics tracking system is in place to report out on the Thrift Stores Triple Bottom Line

· Works with the Development Team to establish corporate sponsorship and donations for Aunt Leah’s Thrift Store. Is responsible for managing Aunt Leah’s “Love to Give” donation campaign.

· Works with the Bootstraps Coordinator to ensure employment and training opportunities happen smoothly and embrace Aunt Leah’s core values

· Works with the Volunteer and Events Coordinator to establish positive relations with individuals and groups who volunteer time to the thrift store and Donations Centre

· Works with Aunt Leah’s communication team to ensure Thrift Store and Donation Centre communications reflect Aunt Leah’s branding and themes

· Oversees and ensures that all legal requirements (licensing, zoning, insurance) are in place

2. Aunt Leah’s Tree Lot Social Enterprise

· Reviews and updates business plan to include expansion and growth of Aunt Leah’s Tree Lots

· Posts, interviews and hires all seasonal tree lot staff

· Supervises all Tree Lot staff

· Holds regular staff meeting and ensures business plan is followed

· Ensures metrics tracking system is in place to report out on the Tree Lot’s Triple Bottom Line

· Works with the Development Team to establish corporate sponsorship and donations for Aunt Leah’s Tree Lot.

· Works with the Bootstraps Coordinator to ensure employment and training opportunities happen smoothly and embrace Aunt Leah’s core values

· Works with the Volunteer and Events Coordinator to establish positive relations with individuals and groups who volunteer at Aunt Leah’s Tree Lot

· Works with Aunt Leah’s communication team to ensure Tree Lot communications reflect Aunt Leah’s branding and themes

· Has an onsite presence at all tree lot sites during weeks of operations

· Oversees and ensures that all legal requirements (licensing, zoning, insurance) are in place

3. Financial Responsibilities:

· Oversees record keeping and cash handling by working with the Operations Director, Tree Lot Operations Manager and Director of Social Enterprises. Ensures checks and balances are in place and followed.

· Is a member of Aunt Leah’s Development Team and attends Development meetings regularly

· As a member of the Tree Lot Operations and Thrift Store teams adheres to the society’s budget aiming for minimum expenditure and efficiency

· Ensures that all projects are executed profitably and in compliance with standardized business practices – Daily cash reconciliation, banks deposits, and open and close locations.

4. Health and Safety:

· Ensures that all locations maintain to Society standards and according to Aunt Leah’s policies and procedures manual by ensuring location environments are clean, safe and secure.

· Conducts regular emergency drills with staff and volunteers; checks safety devices

· Completes and participates in the annual review of Health and Safety Reports and Policy and Procedures

· Maintains and/or implements the procedural processes so both social enterprises maintain the same procedures, where possible.

5. Communication:

· Reviews and Submits Weekly and Monthly Sales Reports to Operations Director and Director of Social Enterprises

· Completes and submits a Yearly Outcomes Report to the Director of Training and Social Development

· Attends Social Enterprise team, Bootstraps, Development and Health and Safety meeting as requested by Director of Social Enterprise

· Provides direction during crisis situations and seeks support from Director of Social Enterprise as needed

· Oversees and maintains the location managers communication log

6. Physical Demands:

· This position requires some lifting of 50lb or heavier.

· Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions during tree lot season

· Performs other related duties, as directed by the Director of Training & Social Enterprises, that do not affect the nature of the job

7. Hours of Work:

· Variable work week including weekends (37.5 hours a week; 7.5 hours/day)
