The Project Manager manages the entire lifecycle of small project or phases of a large project which include developing a project plan, coordinating the activities of a project team, assigning tasks to project team members, identifying appropriate resources needed, developing schedules to ensure timely completion of project, controlling project budget, and providing status updates to stakeholders
The Project Manager will manage Business Technology projects which may include systems that support student application, student experience, content management, workflow management, business intelligence, finance, marketing, collaboration, and people management.
The Project Manager reports to the Associate Director, Business Technology Management at the UBC Sauder School of Business. Works within a project team environment typically made up of a project manager, business analyst, user representatives, technology experts, and vendors. Collaborates closely with stakeholders, including staff and faculty members from Sauder and other faculties.
The Business Technology Management Office (BTMO) is a technology integrator in support of the UBC Sauder School of Business and its students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and business partners.
Lead project teams through a complete project life cycle.
Monitor project scope, schedule, budget, and other key aspects to ensure successful project delivery.
Identify and mitigate project risks, and ensure project deliverables meet regulatory and compliance requirements.
Manage expectations and foster team communications in a collaborative environment.
Work with project business owner and stakeholders to understand project requirements.
Manages projects and is responsible for a portfolio that is responsible for Faculty CV systems, internal communications, admission systems for graduate programs and data analytics. Projects range from small scale to large scale and will requires ongoing evaluation based on clients requirements.
Initiates projects following BTMO's project management methodology including requirements, business case, project plan, resource requirements, testing, change management, and proper closure.
Provides work direction and leadership to assigned project team, including scheduling, assignment of work, review of project efforts, and removal of roadblocks which may inhibit project success.
Assesses variance from project plans, budgets, and schedules, develops and implements changes as necessary to ensure that the project remains within specified scope and is within time, costs, and quality, and keeps management aware of the situation.
Conducts formal post implementation review with Business Owner at project completion to confirm acceptance, satisfaction, and value realization.
Identifies and recommends potential improvements on current project tools and methodologies.
Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with Business Owners, vendors, and key stakeholders.
Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
Performs other related duties as required.
Work under the general direction of the Associate Director, Business Technology Management. Must be able to work independently under minimal supervision, and collaboratively in a project team environment.
Provide leadership and education to project team members who are new to working on a project. May supervise work of other business analysts, UBC IT staff, and Vendor on a project.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Sauder Business Technology Management Office (BTMO) oversees the technology budget and solutions to the Business School. The Project Manager may validate work from other project managers, business analysts, UBC IT staff, or vendor on campus wide projects. Poor judgement, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect and adversely impact the university community, affecting up to tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff, and could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost productivity, funding and revenue. Unreliable systems or failure to meet contractual obligations for performance and availability will damage the reputation of the Business School and UBC.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Prefer Business Technology Management or relevant discipline Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. of work experience managing full technology project lifecycles. Formal certification from the Project Management Institution (PMI), or professional development provider required. Change management certification is an asset. Experience in a higher education environment is an asset.
