HSSE Specialist (Contract) – Saskatoon
As part of Maple Leaf Food’s Health, Safety, Security & Environment team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the Company’s Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) programs, policies, systems and reports for the McLeod Plant. This position will ensure legislative and Plant compliance with occupational health and safety by “on the floor” involvement with operations. This position will include but not limited to; assisting in the development of safe work procedures, training, claims management and assessing/controlling risk to reduce/eliminate accidents/incidents which cause personal injury and/or property damage. The goal of this position will be to standardize safe work methods and recognize high impact behaviours to achieve a world class health and safety program. The successful candidate will be involved in all Health & Safety activities related to the McLeod Plant.
A snap shot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do:
Compliance in OHS program activity (WHMIS / MSDS, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, fall prevention/protection, contractor management, mobile equipment – shock watch, compliance observations)
Monitors departmental safety meeting, advises employees on legislated and industry changes
Creates, audits, and monitors the compliance of any new or existing Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Safe Work Procedures (SWP), and Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) with the supervisors and employees
Develop, delivers and audits the New Hire and the Contractor Orientations
Provide support and follow up with the supervisors and senior supervisors regarding accident and incident investigation reports; specifically follow up on outstanding or ineffective corrective actions
Enter any and all work orders upon receipt from the supervisors from safety tour reports. Ensure that they have been properly classified according the work order classification system and communicate any other information required to the Maintenance Planner.
Promote the Health and Safety plans, goals and objectives
Engage and involve workers in Health and Safety programs by ensuring compliance with active policies and procedures, planned task observations in order to ensure understanding, and inform supervisor if policies and procedures are not being met.
Communicate any and all pertinent or emergency Health and Safety Issues or Concerns with the site Leadership Team in the absence of the HSSE Manager
Assist in the coaching and mentoring of the HSSE Coordinator with effective tools and practices
Provide support to the First Aid Team, supervisors and employees in the event of a plant emergency
Complete required forms and documentation as necessary for WCB, STD, LTD claims and forward to appropriate resources
Assist employees in completion of required forms
Initiate and follow up on appeals of claims and claim costs
Other duties may be assigned

What you will bring:
- Superior knowledge of machine guarding and lock out tag out of manufacturing equipment
- Previous experience working supporting a large client group.
- Previous experience working with regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Labour or Ministry of the Environment would be an asset
- Proven ability to able to handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment within specified time frames
- Ability to support and influence multiple levels of management within an organization
- Experience effectively managing WCB claims
- Knowledge of compliance and regulatory training of all personnel working onsite
- Meeting regulatory filing and reporting requirements (OHS related)

- Strong communication, interpersonal, organization and analytical Skills. Very detail orientated with proven project management skills.
- 5-8 years of experience in progressively responsible H&S roles
- Strong knowledge of business and plant processes
- Computer skills - desktop applications, Health & Safety and HR applications
- The ability to build relationships and credibility, to be in a position to influence others
- Ability to design and evaluate effective training programs
- Strong knowledge and experience in all aspects of Occupational Health & Safety and Security
- Able to develop and implement Job Hazard Analysis program
- Able to identify and integrate into safe work methods high impact behaviours, and develops and applies leading indicator measurements
