With a state-of-the-art genomics, breeding and tissue culture facility in Edmonton, organic soil production facilities in Grand Forks, British Columbia and Edmonton, Alberta, the company is establishing a strong foothold in R&D and production operations with a significant sales and distribution network in Canada.

Reporting to the Chief Science Officer and in accordance with strategic direction provided by company leadership, the successful candidate will define and execute the genomic tools for use in R&D that will enable the ground-breaking discoveries in the cannabis industry. Scientist (Genomics) will be responsible for experimental design, conducting experiments, optimize throughput, data collection and analysis, lab safety, and generate standard operating procedures. This is an exciting opportunity for applying genomics science to the cannabis discovery research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and perform lab procedures, different assays, including nucleic acid isolation and NGS library preparation according to SOPs using appropriate routine laboratory techniques
  • Analysis of sequence, molecular biology, and genotyping data and reporting for NGS progress updates
  • Develop and validate high-throughput SNP marker platforms using combination of NGS and bioinformatics platforms
  • Maintains SOPs, lab data and records, lab note books and computer databases
  • Assist Breeder and biotech team for making contributions to cannabis variety development process
  • Procure, manage and maintain equipment’s, supplies and software for day-to-day lab workflows
  • A professional and collaborative relationship with co-workers and customers
  • Supervise a functional lab work supplies by monitoring reagent preparation schedule, lab cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and material safety data sheet (MSDS)
  • Work on assignments that are complex in nature where judgement and initiative is required to resolve problems and make recommendations.
  • Maintain professional academic, regular industry and scientific community contacts
  • Attend professional meetings to represent company’s genomics program, promote new discoveries, and to learn and collect information relevant to the genomics research
  • Managing, supporting and training research officers and technicians
  • Maximizing resource use efficiency allocated to genomics research: human, technical, and financial
  • Plan, prepare and ensure proper disbursement of the genomics research program budget
  • Develop, establish, evaluate, and recommend new/novel genomics methods and technologies to speed up discovery research
  • Keep up to date information about genomic technology trends, market competition and align genomics research direction strategy accordingly
  • Work closely with Breeders to make best use of available genetic diversity to drive discovery research
  • Responsible for writing reports, publications and patent applications
  • Maintain professional academic, regular industry and scientific community contacts
  • Attend professional meetings to represent company’s genomics program, promote new research, and to learn and collect information relevant to the genomics research
  • Managing, supporting and training genomics research officers and technicians
  • Maximizing resources use efficiency allocated to genomics research: human, technical, and financial
  • Plan, prepare and ensure proper disbursement of the genomics research budget

The successful candidate will posses the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in plant genomics or related disciplines with extensive experience in genomics, SNP marker development and validation and transcriptomics
  • Experience with nucleic acid isolation, NGS library prep, and sequencing data analysis
  • Computations skills including Perl and Python highly desired. Significant experience in R, Linux and CLC Bio like platforms for the sequence data analysis. These include read mapping, assemblies, RNASeq, and BLAST analysis as well as graphical visualization of genomics data after analysis.
  • Experience with qPCR and ELISA
  • Recent experience in cannabis genomics is preferable.
  • Sound experience of genomics research management, budgeting and reporting
  • Experience with molecular biology protocols, cloning, transformation, gene expression analysis, and genotyping platforms
  • Experience with plant tissue culture, transformation vectors, transformation and genome editing
  • Proficient in English. French is plus
  • High level of integrity and accountability

  • Ability to analyze and communicate information in an effective and accurate manner
  • Strong ability towards report writing, presenting and publishing in peer reviewed, reputed high impact factor international journals
  • Detail oriented for safe work procedures in lab and greenhouse work conditions
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license
