Job Description:
Role Summary

This role will provide strong medical underwriting expertise to further develop the underwriting capability within Insurance Operations. As a member of the Underwriting Risk Management Team, the incumbent is accountable for completing life, critical illness, and disability underwriting audits, as well as underwriter training.

What will you do?

Underwriting Audits

Perform life, critical illness and disability underwriting audits on underwriters as per the Audit Plan. Delivers results to the underwriter and their manager, ensuring appropriate training issues are identified.
Provide input to the ongoing review of the audit parameters.
Training

Assist in developing underwriting training material and participate in underwriting training.
Other accountabilities

Participate in various projects in support of our business partners, which may include product development.
Life and critical illness referrals.
What do you need to succeed?

High level of Underwriting Expertise - Life, Critical Illness, Disability.
Initiative; ability to coach and mentor.
Strong analytical and time management skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to multi-task and make decisions.
Working knowledge of reinsurance.
Designation- Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) preferred.

Decision-Making Authority:
Have an approval authority of $3,000,000 for Life and $500,000 for Critical Illness.
Determine when to escalate a situation or request to the Manager.
Make case specific decisions are aligned with the company’s underwriting guidelines and philosophies.

Key Relationships:
All Canadian Underwriters.
Insurance Operations Management team, including Underwriting Managers, Directors and Assistant Vice Presidents.
Claims, Legal, Product, Distribution, Corporate Underwriting.
Reinsurers.

Education and Experience:
Undergraduate degree preferred.
5-10 years of progressive underwriting experience- life and critical illness required.
The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and balance competing priorities to execute action plans.
Knowledge of auditing best practices would be an asset.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
