PHP Developer (contract)

As a PHP Developer, at ruby you will be involved in all stages of developing that product. You'll create new product ideas and help guide the product roadmap, spec out what the next generation will look like, and implement it yourself. Because of this, we look for individuals who thrive in an environment where they will work creatively, take initiative and deliver on commitments.

The Challenge

As developers at ruby, we deal with some of the most challenging problems any of us have come across. The scale and speed of our growth forces us to experiment with techniques and technologies only the very biggest websites ever need to use. Sometimes we find something other people have pioneered, and adapt it to fit our sites. Other times we’re the pioneers, inventing new solutions.

Here’s what you’ll do (Responsibilities)

  • Contribute to product design and implementation discussions
  • Push the envelope on speed to implement projects from the idea phase to production
  • Test and iterate code before and after production release
  • Design, architect, and implement new functionality
  • Maintain existing code base and implement new features as required

Required Skills, Knowledge & Attributes

  • University degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field
  • Ability to analyze, modify, and extend existing applications as well as develop new code
  • Understanding of scalability, systems engineering and algorithms
  • Ability to quickly learn new languages, as required to support the business
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including senior management, peers and third parties
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented, excellent time management skills, good sense of humour
  • Attention to detail
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in learning to work with various JavaScript libraries and frameworks


  • Proven experience in Software Development (Full Stack) with an understanding of test/behavior driven development
  • Experience with PHP 5+, MySQL 5+
  • Good experience with LAMP
  • Experience with JavaScript MV* frameworks, design patterns and jQuery
  • Experience with HTML and CSS
  • Experience working with third party APIs and Web API development
  • Experience with Version control and Git
  • Experience with Nginx is an asset
  • Experience with Linux is an asset
  • Experience working with payment processing is an asset
  • Experience with Unix shell scripts is an asset
  • Experience with websites localization is an asset
