Formac Publishing is hiring an administrative assistant to provide assistance in the areas of accounting, order processing, editorial project handling and distribution. We are seeking someone with prior experience in an office environment, who is technically savvy and adept at balancing multiple projects at once. The position offers an opportunity to gain experience in multiple facets of a dynamic and creative industry.
Because we are a small team of 10-12 people, all of our staff members are flexible in the variety of work they take on. You will have opportunities to take on a wide range of tasks and responsibilities over the course of a year.
We publish 15-20 books for readers in Nova Scotia and beyond every year. Our authors are creating innovative and appealing books over a wide range of subjects - kids' books, cookbooks, young adult fiction, regional history and biography. Our authors and their books are covered by regional and national media, and we promote them using a mix of traditional and digital methods. We also participate in campaigns to encourage policies and programs aimed at increasing awareness and reading of local and Canadian books. We've been publishing books since 1978 and we have over 1,000 books in print (check them out at www.formac.ca). We also provide production, marketing and distribution services to James Lorimer & Company, which itself publishes 25-30 new books a year.
We're located in Halifax's South End, and our office environment allows our staff to work together while observing all the rules and procedures for a safe workplace with proper distancing.
The job involves:
Dealing with book manuscripts and their authors
Providing support with accounting tasks
Responding to customer queries via phone and email
Assisting with book distribution
Additional administrative tasks and general office support
Working with a wide variety of software applications and databases
Editorial and production work
Skills and abilities:
Experience with Microsoft Office (including Microsoft Excel), Google Drive, and other common office software programs
Strong attention to detail
Strong written and oral communication abilities, comfortable in phone, email and video conferencing communications
A self-starter who can work with minimal direction
Highly organized and conscientious
A team player comfortable in a small office environment
Qualifications and experience:
A college or university degree in business or business administration
1-2 years' experience in an office environment and demonstrated technical ability with aforementioned programs
Bookkeeping experience highly desirable
An arts degree with high academic standing an asset
Publishing-related experience or courses (such as copy editing, proofreading, book production) also an asset
