Founded in 1965, Christian Horizons is a non-profit, faith-based charitable organization serving people with exceptional needs in Canada and in developing countries around the world. With over 3,500 employees, Christian Horizons supports nearly 2,000 people with developmental disabilities and their families through residential and ancillary programs such as participation supports, employment supports, and supported vacation opportunities. Christian Horizons has more than 200 residences as well as respite care and independent living locations throughout Ontario and Saskatchewan. Internationally, Christian Horizons works in partnership with local organizations to promote the inclusion and rights of people living in exceptional circumstances in six developing countries.
DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL
OSHAWA (Durham 26)
The Direct Support Professional provides critical services to the people supported by Christian Horizons and works to ensure that people belong to communities in which their God-given gifts are valued and respected. The Direct Support Professional seeks to promote Christian Horizons’ Service Principles by enhancing relationships, promoting citizenship, valuing people’s gifts, recognizing self-determination, encouraging growth and development, and recognizing the need for holistic supports in a manner that considers each person’s intrinsic value.
The successful candidate adapts well to change; is able to restrain emotions under difficult situations and challenges; maintains clear communication with people supported, staff and community partners, and addresses issues in a respectful manner. The ability to demonstrate advocacy, promote personal choice and encourage independence is required. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to Person-Centered Support and direct support teams, be open to new ideas, and display analytical and creative problem solving abilities. Strong coaching and conflict resolution skills are critical for success in this program.
Requirements: Ideal candidates have education in Developmental Services, Child and Youth Worker, Behavioural Sciences or a related field. First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certifications are preferred qualifications. Candidates are required to have a valid driver’s license and have a commitment to team goals through assigned tasks and responsibilities and Person-Centered Support.
