The Loss Prevention Officer minimizes financial losses through loss prevention initiatives by implementing a loss prevention program at the direction of the General Manager and the store owner. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, monitoring of customers and staff entering and exiting the store, being the first point of contact in theft prevention and recovery, creating of loss prevention programs, helping implement technology solutions to help minimize theft, training employees in loss prevention best practices, assisting developing loss prevention strategies and being the store liaison with law enforcement.

Job Duties

  • Implement loss prevention programs for the organization
  • Ensure the safeguard of the organization and its employees from internal and external threats
  • Control loss of company revenue due to theft, property damage, injury, poor inventory controls etc. and protect the company assets through loss prevention strategies
  • Initiate arrest and recovery of merchandise and follow through of the investigation upon the observance of theft
  • File police reports and collect and provide evidence as necessary
  • Initiate, conduct and/or monitor security related checks and correct any issues found
  • Investigate all reports of losses within the organization and ensure the incidences are corrected
  • Ensure documentation of safety and loss prevention are up to date and properly documented
  • Ensure security policies and procedures are in place and being utilized at all times
  • Initiate and supervise internal and external audits in reference to loss prevention; compile data, create reports and present findings to upper management
  • Implement loss prevention strategies and objectives designed to educate and enhance awareness among all levels of employees
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Post-secondary education in related field
  • 3 years of experience in safety and/or loss prevention is required
  • Strong investigative skills
  • Licensed as per requirements (for e.g. to carry handcuffs, baton etc.)
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Highly effective communication skills both oral and written
  • Understand and have complete knowledge of all Federal and Provincial rules and regulations pertaining to safety codes and Occupational Health and Safety rules
  • Strong sense of professionalism and diplomacy
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
