The ERAS Clinical Data Specialist is responsible for extracting and abstracting clinical information from the patient record (paper, electronic) within Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERASAlberta). The Clinical Data Specialist will report to the Provincial Manager, ERASAlberta under the Surgery Strategic Clinical Network and work closely with site based ERAS Nurse Instructors, and a provincial Clinical Data Coordinator (HIM II). Job duties include: Gathering/retrieving, updating, collating, extracting, calculating, interpreting, summarizing clinical and demographic surgery data. Identifying eligible ERAS surgeries and finding eligible ERAS patient’s records. Maintaining a site/surgery ERAS Patient List in Excel. Locating and requesting various sources of patient care records (paper and electronic). Extracting and abstracting clinical data elements. Entering data into Data & Reporting Systems. The Clinical Data Specialist is responsible for: Reviewing patient records for classifying patient demographics, surgical care processes, diagnosis and interventions. Collecting, and maintaining patient data in paper and electronic systems. Coding a defined list of elements from patient charts using detailed Data Definitions, the Clinical Data Maintaining confidentiality of all AHS information in accordance with HIA, FOIP and other privacy legislation in effect and shall comply at all times with AHS’s Information Privacy and Information Security policies. ERAS Alberta is a priority provincial initiative of the Surgery Strategic Clinical Network (SCN). This is a temporary position at multiple sites in the Calgary Zone with possibility of extension. This is a job for HIMPs who want to be involved in a clinical team and know the data they are collecting will be actively used to improve quality of patient care and outcomes.
As a Health Information Management Professional I, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting data from clinical records, release of information and/or data quality assurance. In accordance with AHS procedures and the Health Information Act, you will gather, retrieve, collate, code, design, analyze, interpret clinical and demographic data and perform statistical reporting and regular data quality reviews for patient records.

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 3-5 years HIM experience with a sound knowledge and demonstrated ability medical terminology and disease processes. Minimum 2 years in research data collection (extraction/ abstraction/ entry). Intermediate to Advanced MS Office Suite 2010. Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy of information and to organize and prioritize workload to meet established deadlines. Strong analytical skills and sound judgment to make informed decisions as it relates to data collection. Ability to foster positive interpersonal and communication skills with peers, staff and various. stakeholders and work well within a team environment. Ability to concentrate on details for extended periods.
