Reporting to the Team Lead of System Administration 2, the Systems Administrator, Infrastructure (SAI) provides system administration for servers, storage and switches that host critical and central services used by campus users, campus computers, as well as external clients.

The incumbent of this position will help to look after the physical infrastructure used to support the technology stack used by the University of Alberta. The physical infrastructure components consists of things such as VMware ESXi hosts, storage controllers and disk arrays (SAN), fiber channel switches, and the central backup environment appliances – all of which are kept and maintained in the 3 data centers on campus. In addition, they will assist in the management of cloud infrastructure, helping with the creation and integration of cloud based services.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include performance and security monitoring of servers to ensure efficient operation and to meet business and service requirements; working with other teams and/or vendors in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of issues affecting thousands of users and systems; working in projects; and providing technical expertise for service deployments.

Note that this position requires that the incumbent participate in a 24-hour, 7-day on-call support rotation, and as well as scheduled off-hour maintenance.

Duties

Administers and monitors large number of ESXi hosts, switches, and storage arrays to ensure availability and efficiency of critical University services.
Performs general administration of infrastructure that support services in the central domain, and in any satellite domains that IST supports.
Performs disaster recovery and data restore tests, as in defined guidelines, to ensure business continuity.
Monitors cloud instances (VPCs, EC2 stacks etc).
Administration of block storage based arrays.
Audits access permissions.
Proactively and reactively handles alerts produced by the central monitoring service.
Coordinates outage windows with clients and teams when necessary.
Documents any information gaps on new and existing servers and services.
Leverages automation technologies and cloud technologies to help with server administration and cloud infrastructure administration.
Installs and configures operating systems on both physical ESXi hosts, cloud environments, and special purpose devices (such as storage controllers and fiber channel switches).
Leverages automation technologies to help with VM and OS deployment and configuration, as well as installation of tools and software.
Provides technical expertise in delivering new services, troubleshooting problems.
Troubleshoots issues affecting users and perform root cause analysis.
Works with vendors to develop workarounds or solutions to problems.
Documents systems architecture, configurations, critical procedures and actions to be taken in troubleshooting problems.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor degree in Computing Science or a related field, or equivalent Technical Diploma combined with relevant experience.
Minimum 3 years of experience working in large and complex IT environments.
Minimum 2 years of working experience with VMware ESXi hosts and environments.
Minimum 1 year of working experience with large storage arrays/SAN.
Minimum 1 year of working experience with fiber channel switches.
Working experience in virtual desktop environments.
Working experience with cloud environments and technologies.
Proven experience administering large numbers of systems in an enterprise environment.
Working experience in networking, virtualization technology, systems security.
Programming (scripting) experience with PowerShell, VB Scripting.
Understanding of ITIL.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Problem solving, analytical and time management skills.
