Reporting to the Team Lead of Communications, the Communications Designer is responsible for translating information to users through messaging and graphic means. By combining key business sense and creative flare, this position weaves together content and visuals to create commanding and effective forms of communication. This role aids in building organizational transformation through communication of department strategy and cultural goals, while supporting internal projects and teams.

In addition, the Communications Designer is responsible for assisting the Communications Team in educating the university community on departmental initiatives, services, and aids in building relationships between the department and the institution. This role will work as part of an integrated team of communications specialists, which include a Web Designer and Writer.

Duties

Responsible for assisting the Communications Team Lead in developing coordinated marketing plans for departmental services.
Collaborates with co-workers to build effective storytelling techniques aimed to promote and share departmental information through various mediums (print, digital, web, and video, etc.).
Acts as lead designer in creating departmental promotional materials (brochures, Students' Union TV ads, banners, social media graphics, etc.).
Assists with creating communication materials that support departmental goals, priorities, and deliverables while aligning with strategy milestones.
Uses creative solutioning for presenting new or complex ideas so information is conveyed in engaging and digestible ways, such as infographics and other creative solutions aimed to educate the intended audience.
Sustains a succinct brand and virtual identity for the department through a standard branding toolset.
Monitors and evaluates communication strategies using various methods including, but not limited to, website and online analytics, surveys, and focus groups.
Assists in identifying target audiences, key messaging, communication goals and strategies through communication consultation and works with project owners to develop executable solutions through marketing and communication.
Creates, manages and updates communication tools which assist to support internal departmental projects, goals and objectives (letterheads, templates, presentations, etc.).
Solutions and develops strategies aimed to engage the department and support greater collaboration and innovation.
Problem solves and develops solutions for communicating departmental strategies and goals.
Engages with employees to drive insightful feedback on employee culture and provide supporting solutions based on indicated drivers.
Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor of Design (BDes), specializing in Visual Communication Design; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered (e.g. certificate in graphic or visual design, supplemented with a combination of training and experience demonstrated through portfolio review and job history).
Demonstrated experience and fluency working with current standard creative software titles, including Adobe Creative Suite (with particular practiced skill in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver).
Understanding of CSS and HTML, with the ability to work within various content management systems (Wordpress, Drupal, Sitecore).
Understanding and working knowledge of print and web/digital production.
Comfortable and capable of working with multiple complex design projects in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
