We are looking for the right candidates to work with some special people.

When a person with exceptionalities feels frustrated, mad, sad, or anxious they may not know how to express these emotions without becoming physical to themselves or those around them. They need the very best Support Workers to help them navigate these emotions and physical responses.

We are currently hiring for part-time weekend shifts to provide direct support to adult individuals. Availability for both Saturday and Sunday is required. Shifts are scheduled as 8am -4pm, 4pm- 12 am, 10am -6pm, 1pm – 9pm etc. (can be scheduled as every weekend, or every other weekend)

A Part-time Residential Counsellor will carry out all duties in accordance with the established routine of the home or program location. You will provide direct support to adults with developmental disabilities to learn and participate in their community. You will promote and encourage independence, choice and self-determination.

Working Conditions

Must be able to safely provide support to people with Behaviour Support Plans and apply behavioural intervention techniques. (Specialized training will be provided)
Must have the physical ability to provide personal care, push wheelchairs, drive, and complete regular household tasks (lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling).
Must be comfortable in the water to support individuals who are participating in swimming activities

Required Technical Competencies:
You have:
A diploma in Developmental Service Worker (DSW), Social Service Worker (SSW), Child and Youth Worker (CYW), Behavioural Sciences, Psychology, Police Foundations, Education Assistance
1 year related experience providing support to adults with developmental disabilities, transitional aged youth, complex needs, and autism (experience may include volunteer and school placements)
a valid Full G Driver’s License, will need to provide a clean driver’s abstract.
A reliable vehicle that you will use to transport people we support
a valid First Aid certificate
Current Safe Management Certification, and Pharmacology desirable

You are:
comfortable with providing behavioural support interventions using Safe Management
comfortable providing personal care and hygiene support to adults
Passionate about advocating for others
A great communicator, and have great verbal and written skills to facilitate communication with your peers, manager, individuals supported and their families
Professional, responsive and have a positive work attitude. You will uplift your team
Great at time management and possess organizational skills that will allow you meet the administrative needs and the needs of those you support
Able to work independently and as a team member, keeping your focus on the needs to those you support
Proficient with PC computers and ability to use on-line software for accurate record keeping

Understand and practice the mission, vision and values of Community Living Oakville
Create a safe and positive living environment
Review Individual Support Plans/Behaviour Support Plans for the individuals in your care
Follow Individual Support Plan goals and recommendations for all residents

You will also:
Attend all required house meetings/staff meetings as scheduled
Complete all training programs in a timely manner
Provide personal care, which could include bathing, toileting, dressing and feeding
Teach daily living skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, etc., based on person centered planning
Provide direct support and participate in leisure and creative activities in a safe and supportive setting, may include swimming, bowling, cooking, special events and participation in community based recreational activities as assigned
When the natural opportunity arises reinforce conflict resolution, positive communication, and respect, through positive reinforcement, role modeling, supportive listening etc.
Promote an environment for all individuals based on person centered planning that will foster personal growth, social inclusion, leisure/recreation, emotional health, while meeting individual needs such as sensory, mental health, etc.

Experience providing support to individuals who use physical aggression to communicate their needs
Experience promoting community inclusion, independence and personal choice
Excellent critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
Experience with behavioural protocols an asset
Experience working with individuals who have dual diagnosis, autism, behavioural challenges and mental illness an asset
Advocate for the rights and well-being of people you are supporting
Ability to collaborate in diverse teams; acting in a professional manner always
Creatively solve problems, and take initiative
Foster independence in people you are supporting
Flexible with schedule and changing needs during your shift
