Reporting to the Director - South, eSIMulation & Process Improvement the Process Improvement (Pl) Senior Consultant will provide support to Alberta Health Services (AHS) strategic initiatives, service plans, and projects to advance strategic objectives and quality clinical program development and implementation across sites/sectors; provide leadership and direction to various stakeholders to assist them to understand, utilize, and implement process improvement strategies and methodologies (e.g. Lean, Six Sigma) to enhance existing and/or new health system design solutions and opportunities; ensure that assigned projects are researched, developed, implemented, and delivered in accordance with the AHS strategic direction and performance standards. The incumbent will design and facilitate two (2) value stream level improvements (at least three (3) to five (5) inter-connected processes [e.g. ED, Medicine, Surgery]) that tie directly to AHS performance measures every year; train large groups of up to 100 people (from leadership to frontline staff), develop project plans, timelines, deliverables for the projects and meet those (project timelines approximately six (6) to twelve (12) months); coach/mentor P3 Pl Consultants to take on increasingly complex projects; coach/mentor operations champions to a level that allows them to execute small improvement projects on their own; develop working relationships with departmental leaders, physicians, and frontline supervisors and employees to coach them through a change process; be accountable for impact metrics along with operations staff; assist larger system-wide improvement projects.
Projects: Assists the customer to scope assigned work, including determination of processes, deliverables, timeframes and risk assessments. Source or collate and interpret data to conduct current state mapping for PI work. Use PI methodologies to identify opportunities to improve, and test the proposed improvement options for feasible/potential implementation. Guide clients to successfully implement improvements by facilitating resources, tools, training and other processes as appropriate. Assist clients to set up practices (e.g. monitoring to ensure that practices are sustained over time and evaluate, measure, and report improvement data back to client to deepen sustainability); the incumbent(s) independently undertakes client relations and maintains on-going liaison with AHS departments and other stakeholder engagement for PI work. Facilitate and design systems that motivate the culture of continuous improvement at leadership levels. AHS Improvement Way (AIW) Facilitation: Facilitates AIW fundamentals training to a group of up to 40 participants. Trains project teams in advanced AIW tools/techniques (e.g. VSM; A3; Change Over). Conducts Greenbelt Training (online sessions). Mentors project teams and P3 Consultants. Program Development: Assists PI Leadership in improving current training material, design and development of new products/services.

Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, Engineering or Business. Administration (equivalent combination of education and clinical experience may be considered). Minimum 5 years general business experience, preferably in the service or manufacturing sectors. Minimum 3 years of proven experience in using improvement methods and tools in a leading role. Feel comfortable acting in an environment of leadership stakeholders. Quality improvement certification/designations such as Lean, Six Sigma Black Belt, LSS, IHI Improvement Advisor, etc. (Black Belt or equivalent designation; equivalencies will be considered). Expertise in utilizing and providing coaching in improvement tools and methods including but not limited to: Change Management, VSM, DMAIC, 5S, Visual Management, Flow and Load Balancing. Key requirements include strong knowledge of statistical and data analysis, demand capacity balancing, project management and team facilitation. Experience in deploying end-to-end improvements with significant results.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Documented evidence of formal training in quality improvement. Leading multi-stakeholder change initiatives to achieve a strategic objective (cost, quality. lead-time).
Knowledge of project management theories, principles, practices and processes. Solid Continuous Improvement thinking. Integral knowledge and understanding of principles and theories of adult education, simulation modalities and clinical applications to enable design and implementation and evaluation of simulation. Research theory and application. Proficiency in Visio, Excel, Access, Power Point, Word and QI Macros is desirable. Master’s Degree preferred.
