***ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL***

Reports to: General Counsel

JOB SUMMARY:

The Legal Department provides legal advice to the Tsuut’ina Nation, Chief and Council and Senior Management. This includes reviewing and drafting agreements and contracts related to programs and companies and includes advice on policy and procedure for proper oversight and governance. This also includes guidance and advice on legal issues pertaining to First Nations and aboriginal and treaty rights. Assistant General Counsel will assist, and report to, General Counsel in providing these services.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Assistant General Counsel will:

  • attend meetings with Chief and Council and Senior Management and provide advice in relation to legal issues arising at those meetings;
  • attend meetings with third parties, including other governments, businesses and individuals;
  • attend meetings with Aboriginal Relations and Indigenous Services to advance the interests of the Tsuut’ina Nation;
  • advise committees and commissions and boards that have been formed to advance the economic interests of the Tsuut’ina Nation;
  • draft and negotiate agreements, contracts, leases, band council resolutions, directives, and notices;
  • prepare pleadings, motions, claims and other legal documents to advance, protect or defend the interests of the Tsuut’ina Nation;
  • draft, or assist with drafting, laws, policies, procedures, codes and other governing documents of the Tsuut’ina Nation.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Assistant General Counsel must have a law degree and be in good standing of a provincial bar. At least two (2) years of experience working with a First Nation, which may be as in-house counsel or as outside counsel. Must have a strong understanding of the Indian Act and other legislation, both federal and provincial, that affects First Nations and a general understanding of aboriginal and treaty rights. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with individuals at all levels. Must be able to effectively respond to challenges and work in an environment that requires multitasking and the ability to deal with various legal issues. Assistant General Counsel will be expected to give legal advice on a broad range of legal matters.
