The Team Lead, Legal Affairs, is in charge of managing activities related to the delivery of legal services to internal clients in business centres and operational departments. He or she manages the team’s operations, including management of the Legal Services Queue, to ensure that client service is optimized and that the team’s responsibilities are completed in accordance with BDC and legal requirements.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Lead, supervise and provide technical direction to the Legal Assistants team.
Manage the overall administration and coordination of Legal Services processes and procedures to support and deliver quality service and act as a resource person.
Maintain high work standards by managing and planning the workflow and workload of the Legal Assistants team.
Play an active role as a change agent by supporting BDC policies, developing strategies for continuous improvement and participating in pilot projects.
Develop and maintain an effective communication channel with the Legal Assistants team to ensure the timely dissemination of information and adherence to established policies, procedures and practices in the region.
Manage the departmental administrative systems and relationships with external suppliers.
Provide a wide range of operational/statistical reports to assess and meet the Legal team’s objectives.
Provide assistance and support to internal clients and external solicitors through effective management of the In-House Security program.
As directed, provide assistance and support to Head Office Legal by ensuring proper maintenance of the Contingent Liability Report for litigation impacting BDC.
Provide support to internal clients in the preparation of security documents for the In-House Security program and for loan amendments, ensuring that the required legal documentation for each loan is obtained and any remedial action is undertaken as required.
Track receipt of legal security documentation from approved external solicitors.
Draft legal documents for discharges of security documents
Provide support to the Assistant Vice President for the maintenance of the approved solicitors’ list while ensuring compliance with BDC policies and procedures.
Prepare summaries of findings, including sound legal research and analysis of key issues, and provide non-complex legal advice, as may be directed by the Assistant Vice President and/or Counsel.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Legal assistant/law clerk/paralegal diploma or bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience
A minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience
Experience within BDC, an asset
Supervisory experience, an asset
Excellent aptitude for teamwork to achieve shared objectives
Ability to establish priorities effectively; an excellent sense of organization and initiative in order to meet critical deadlines
Excellent analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated ability to lead by example in providing high quality customer service to internal/external clients
Strong knowledge of legal concepts, terminology, procedures, loan security documentation, including real and personal and/or immovable and movable property registration processes
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft Access and other computer systems and software
Strong understanding of BDC’s operations, products, services, policies and procedures, an asset
Bilingualism (written and spoken) may be required depending on location
