Job Title: Shunt Driver

Department: City/Terminal Winnipeg

Reports to: Dispatch


The Shunt Driver is responsible for coordinating and completing the timely movement of trailers at the terminal facility. Work and cooperate with other terminal staff to ensure the efficient use of the yard tractor as well as trailers. Work and cooperate with all external and internal customers to ensure a high level of customer service.Hours or shift may vary depending on freight volumes and customer requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform safely and efficiently the movement and handling of trailers at the Winnipeg terminal
  • Carry out routine maintenance checks of the yard tractor and other equipment as required
  • Cooperate with other terminal staff to maximize the use of trailers in order to meet departure schedules
  • Must commit to perform all work in a safe manner and comply with all Gardewine safe work policies, practices and procedures
  • Supports all Safety & Health initiatives for the safety of all drivers, customers and other terminal employees by following all safety policies and procedures including the incident reporting system.


Strong interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills, valid Class 1 Driver’s License, or AZ License with air brake endorsement in good standing. Able to perform all physical activities for this position, and experience with yard tractor operation, will train for position, warehouse operations, or local P&D an asset.

Physical Requirements

Lifting up to 75 lbs (limited freight handling), pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs of force.

Cranking trailer dollies when required (approximately 50 lbs of force). Frequent stops and climbing in and out of tractor and trailer. Physically demanding position as employee will be dealing with seasonal weather challenges in the yard.
