Reports to

Manager, Information Technology

Position Summary:

The Systems Administrator 1 is responsible for the maintenance of our organization’s desktops and laptops, including the patching of operating systems and applications. You will assist with the patching of Windows and Linux servers that are used to provide BCNET services, as well as ensure we are in compliance with our security best practices and the Information Security Officer for designated infrastructure. You will use and implement server management tools to monitor as well as create baseline performances. You will also assist the project manager in developing, designing and building IT as well as service ticketing processes for BCNET. Other functions include maintaining and verifying the integrity of BCNET’s infrastructure asset lists, as well as assisting our services groups as needed: network, client services and shared systems and technology. You will also document all work through helpdesk and change management software.

Job Duties and Tasks:

Working with the BCNET Information Technology Manager and as a member of the IT team, you will:

  • Provide first- and second-level operational support to ensure the stability and service levels of the BCNET user and server infrastructure
  • Monitor desktop/laptop activity and connectivity, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve desktop/laptop, printing, ticketing system, videoconferencing and other endpoint problems
  • Assess endpoint problems and assist with developing solutions, as well as implementation plans for resolutions
  • Advise and makes recommendations to technical life cycle planning of BCNET desktop/laptops, servers, printers, video conference equipment and other endpoint solutions
  • Employ technical expertise and represent BCNET, as well as support our key service areas such as: network, client services and shared systems and technology in developing workflows and processes in TeamDynamix
  • Utilize existing toolsets to perform server and/or appliance installations, troubleshooting and documentation tasks
  • Implement best practices, standards, procedures and quality objectives across the infrastructure and platforms
  • Maintain appropriate professional designations and current knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools
  • Occasionally required to provide after-hours, on-call support on a rotational basis and be available off-hours to work on emergency server infrastructure problems, maintenance, or project activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

Must

  • Be a Canadian citizen or have required documentation to work in Canada (please confirm in your cover letter)
  • Have a technology diploma/degree and 2-3 years of progressive experience in administering Windows 10 and Apple systems
  • Have an understanding of scripting and command-line tools such as PowerShell to administer Windows endpoints
  • Be familiar with VMware's virtualization
  • Have experience in working in an environment requiring strong Change Control processes and procedures
  • Be able to monitor performance and troubleshoot alerts using tools instructed to use
  • Have experience with Active Directory

Desired

  • Be familiar with the fundamentals of IT security, hardening practices, and security management tools
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows automation facilities (i.e. PowerShell, DSC)
  • Have experience with system failure analysis and recovery. Ensuring system consistency and integrity.
  • Have some understanding of Database systems (i.e. Mysql, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL)
  • Good knowledge of LAMP configuration
  • Have experience in effectively presenting technical solutions to customers

Assets

  • Experience with LDAP, Radius, DHCP, DNS
  • Familiarity with Jira, Wiki, and Confluence applications
  • Windows Automation tools
  • Experience working within the higher education
