The Junior Data Scientist reports to the OSI Manager, Statistical Services and will carry out tasks such as statistical analysis, programming, data management and visualizations on cross-ministry projects that OSI is undertaking. Performing this role requires a willingness to innovate and try new methods and tools. The ideal candidate will have a strong drive for innovation and analytics to solve problems using a data driven methodology.
The junior data scientist is expected to program in several languages and demonstrate a willingness to learn new tools and technologies such as: SAS, Git, R, Python, Tensorflow and D3. You do not need to know all of these languages but should understand what is appropriate for different tasks.
A completion of a post-secondary degree in relevant discipline (Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Social Sciences) with two or more years of experience and proficiency in analyzing data is required.
Experience and proficiency in the use of data analytics software (e.g., SAS, R, or Python) is required. Candidates must demonstrate comprehension of data analytics including ability to assess existing data sources and devise mechanisms to adapt or utilize alternate data sources such as administrative data to be used for statistical purposes.
Knowledge and understanding of statistical theories, principles and practices, and their use in research processes, defining statistical methodologies and application to analytical processes (e.g., ensure ability to implement and evaluate methods for sampling, collecting, processing and analyzing data) is required.
Knowledge and understanding of statistical concepts, methodologies and techniques used in the acquisition and development of data for research and analysis, policy/program development, issue resolution and decision support functions is an asset.
Familiarity with best practices around data visualization and reproducible data science workflows would be an asset.
Familiarity with open data and open source tools, such as Git, R, Python, & QGIS would be an asset.
Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Evidence of ongoing professional development to maintain currency of knowledge is essential.

$2,588.03 to $3,394.66 bi-weekly ($67,548 to $88,600 annually)
