The primary function of the registered veterinary technician is to work as a member of the professional team in the delivery of veterinary care. They work under the direct supervision of the attending veterinarian and are responsible for ensuring that high quality veterinary care is provided with maximum efficiency. A successful registered veterinary technician strives to excel in customer service, ensuring that our clients and patients receive the best care possible. The veterinary technician must demonstrate the ability to:

⦁ Perform basic examinations on cats and dogs and record vital signs and medical history

⦁ Animal restraint as necessary for medical procedures

⦁ Collect and process routine laboratory tests, such as blood chemistries, urinalysis, cytologies, cultures and fecal examinations

⦁ Administer medications by common drug routes

⦁ Prepare pharmaceuticals as prescribed by a veterinarian

⦁ Administer anesthetics: induce anesthesia, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery

⦁ Perform dental prophylactic procedures and dental radiographs

⦁ Produce standard radiographs

⦁ Perform cleaning, sanitation and sterilization procedures

⦁ Counsel clients especially for outpatient procedures

⦁ Recognize behavioural signs of small animals
