Production Planner

The primary role of this position is to generate a production plan that meets all sales orders in timely manner and maintain the necessary inventory while utilizing all available resources such as manpower, machines and material as best as possible. This weekly plan would have to be formulated and adjusted as necessary on an ongoing basis in conjunction with streamlined communication between Customer Service, Purchasing and the Production Supervisors.

The Production Planner will manage the production schedule to ensure demand and supply are balanced at all times. The role requires planning of demand, capacity, and inventory; and develop strategies for adapting to variances of the plan. The Production Planner coordinates communication and data flow between Manufacturing, Purchasing, Sales and some Industrial customers to ensure an optimal supply chain.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create and constantly update a weekly production schedule to ensures near 100% fill rate at all times
  • Ensure all Kosher and allergens related stringent requirements are met while ensuring best utilization of all manufacturing lines
  • Create jobs, monitor WIP allocations, complete and close them on daily basis, reconcile to Standard Costs by logging variances into appropriate G/L accounts
  • Monitor WIP Loss factors, BOM errors, EBQs and update as required
  • Effectively forecast skus with varying sales classes i.e. MTOs, Seasonal, Regular stock items and New skus with no historical data
  • Provide weekly, monthly forecasts to the Purchasing department for timely procurements and annual forecast to Finance department for budgeting
  • Update Stock Master as required and keep it up to date
  • Ensure Bills of Materials (BOMs) are accurate, up to date and reflect the latest manufacturing processes on the production floor
  • Periodically review and audit actual labor, material, and overhead costs against Standard cost, research variances and update costs as necessary
  • Support month-end closing with a follow up on month-end clean-up issues in the first week of the following month
  • Work with maintenance department to plan annual preventative maintenance schedule of various production lines throughout the year
  • Work with the finance department to participate in the creation of labor and overhead rates, and implement cost accounting policies and procedures
  • Work with various other departments to provide them with necessary WIP related information as necessary
  • Actively be involved in any Health, Safety and Environment initiatives
  • Special projects and additional responsibilities as assigned


  • Post-secondary education with “Certified in Production and Inventory Management” (CPIM from APICS) certification preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in production planning preferably a food manufacturing environment
  • Experience working with Kosher/NK, Dairy products with varying amount of allergens and shelf life preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills specifically look-ups, IF functions, charts and pivot tables
  • Strong leadership, coaching and team building skills to lead a team of Planning Assistant and Cost Analyst towards their personal and professional development
  • Effective communication skills with an ability to engage at all levels of the organization to ensure free flow of information for better decision making
  • Results orientated with demonstrated analytical and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently with great attention to detail and accuracy
  • Self-motivated with great organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Ability to adapt quickly to constantly changing priorities with a sense of urgency
