NHC is seeking several contract Community Development Recreation Assistants – Portable Support Workers to assist with Child and Youth programming including homework clubs and social recreational groups. The goal of our social recreational programing is to provide children and youth a safe and supportive place to enhance social and life skills, positive roll modeling and interaction, and self-esteem through group activities.

Desired skills, abilities and/or experience:

This position is an ideal opportunity for psychology, education, social work, child and youth work, recreation students, or other related disciplines to learn about the challenges of child and youth programming in social housing and provide programming that is affordable, fun and engaging for the tenant population. Applicants should be enrolled in or graduated from a relevant post-secondary program related to the position requirements.

A minimum of one year experience in youth related programming; demonstrated understanding of issues facing youth and their families; knowledge of and experience working with community resources; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and, sensitivity to people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Must know enough French to be able to assist children with grades 1-6 French Homework.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Planning, set up and take down of activities.
  • Providing support to children needing assistance with their homework.
  • Providing recreational activities for children to enhance their social and educational experiences.
  • Snack preparation.

Additional screening required for this role:

All applicants will be required to submit and a police reference checks for working with the vulnerable sector and a list of at least two references. Recent first aid and CPR are considered assets.

  • Conducting community outreach, registration, and collection of participant attendance data and program evaluation.
  • Teaching and enforcing safety rules promoting a safe environment for all children participating in the program.

Minimum time commitment per week:

3-12 hours per week. Available shifts are between the hours of 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, or 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm, or 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday to Thursday. There may be additional evening hours, depending on the candidate’s availability. Varied shifts.

Job Type: Contract

Salary: $15.00 to $17.00 /hour
