Job Description

We are seeking a Residential Mental Health Worker with a passion for the wellbeing of others to assist residents living with mental health challenges and other chronic health conditions. Our ideal candidate has an understanding of psychosocial rehabilitation, experience working with individuals with concurrent disorders in a harm reduction setting, and can build professional rapport with residents in a manner that maintains and respects the spirit, dignity and inclusivity and individuality of others in a 7 bed supportive home. Primary consideration is given to providing a safe, accessible and inclusive working and living environment for both residential program participants and cmha employees. The residential mental health worker oversees meal preparation and coaches’ residents in life skills as part of preparation for more independent living such as daily chores and activities which may include accompanying individuals to medical appointments, volunteer shifts and exercise programs. This part-time position is Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 3:30pm to 10:30pm.

Regular part-time staff have the ability to pick up additional casual shifts at any of our supportive homes in North Vancouver.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote self-reliance and independence by supporting residents to participate in and achieve the goals of their care plans in order to maintain recovery from mental health issues
  • Provide practical assistance, support, and mentor residents with activities of daily living such as housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, money management, interpersonal skills, community integration, making and keeping appointments and other related skills as they arise.
  • Ensure all residents are accounted for, perform safety checks throughout the shift if needed
  • Report any activity during the shift in progress notes and communication log
  • Follow protocol if a resident is under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Check-in and out with other houses
  • Respond to an emergency or crisis situation
  • Prepare and serve dinner, snack at designated time.
  • House chores to be completed and to assist with Resident chores and room maintenance if needed.
  • Coordinate the delivery of, check for accuracy of and administer medications
  • Liaise with Community Psychiatric Services or other related mental health, addiction or other government or community supports, as needed.
  • Perform any other duties as needed.

  • Diploma or Degree in a Social Services or related field, or a combination of education, lived and work experience
  • Experience working with people living with mental health and substance use challenges and other barriers
  • Experience working with people living with concurrent disorders in a harm reduction setting is an asset
  • Basic computer and Internet literacy (including MS Word/Excel/Outlook, G-Mail)
  • Excellent oral communication skills. Second language is an asset
  • Physical capacity to carry out the duties and operate related equipment
  • Valid First Aid Level 1 and CPR are conditions of employment
  • Food Safe Certificate is a condition of employment
  • Vulnerable Population Criminal Record Check is a condition of employment

Weekend Afternoon Shift at Lillian Place

Afternoons: 3:30 pm- 10:30pm

$19.00- $20.00/hour + 6% vacation

Special Considerations

Regular part-time workers are able to pick up casual shifts at any of our three homes and are given priority for open full-time or part-time positions at CMHA NWV. Casual shifts are scheduled in advance to cover vacation, statutory holidays, long term leave and may also occur the day of due to sudden illness.

Casual Shifts at Harold House, Lillian House & Arborlynn House

Days: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, $19.00- $20.00/hour + 6% vacation

Afternoons: 3:30 PM– 10:30 PM, $19.00- $20.00/hour + 6% vacation

Overnights: 12:00am – 6:00am interrupted sleep shift, $15.00-16.00/hour + 6% (Lillian, Harold)

Overnights: 10:00 PM – 6:00am interrupted sleep shift, First 2 hours $19.00 and then $15.00-16.00/hour + 6% (Arborlynn House)

Wage for statutory holidays all shifts: Time and a half regardless of how many hours worked in

the previous 30 days.
