Human Resources Advisor – Mulgrave, N.S.

The Challenge

The HR Advisor supports the local Leadership team and employees. This lead HR role will provide strategic and tactical support in areas of talent acquisition/development, organizational planning and design, improving manager effectiveness and creating and sustaining a diverse and innovative culture that drives employee engagement. This position performs a full range of HR functions.

The Position

Serves as strategic business advisor to the site leadership team, collaborating to execute in key people & organization areas such as talent acquisition, performance management, compensation review, talent development, employee relations, etc.
Provides local support for talent acquisition and the proliferation of DSM’s employee value proposition through guiding and liaising with DSM Talent Acquisition team, and external networking in the community with the aim at improving employer brand and reputation in the community as well as new-hire orientation and onboarding.
Acts as the primary contact with external vendors and agencies in the area of disability case management, lost-time/incident reporting, and accommodations.
Provides guidance, consultation and assistance to management and employees on employee relations matters and coordinates investigations of misconduct. Offers advice on complaints, disputes and appeals, adverse actions, employee discipline and related matters.
Establishes and maintains effective and credible relationships with management and employees by maintaining regular and consistent presence at the shop floor and maintaining an open-door environment.
Sits on the site steering committee for continuous improvement with a primary focus on mindset and behaviour.
Provides local support in the area of employee and team development including talent assessment, development planning and succession planning.
In conjunction with the SHE department, provides local support in the implementation of initiatives aimed at employee health and wellness including promotion of access to EAP and programs promoting healthy and active living.
Provide support in reward and recognition of personnel including spot recognition programs, service awards, and quarterly incentive program support.
Maintain accurate up-to-date legally compliant and confidential personnel and medical files.
Complies with all Safety Health and Environment (SHE) instructions and procedures to include awareness of and following all DSM Life Saving Rules. Acts in such a way that safety awareness and accident prevention are considered in performing all tasks while displays and promoting positive safety behaviors at all times

The Ideal

Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in Human Resources Management and/or certificate or diploma in Human Resources Management
CPHR designation is considered an asset
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Prior experience working with HRIS integrated tools and applications is an asset.
2-5 years of experience as an HR generalist/practitioner, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting; this may include internship or co-op experience
Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills. Self-starter, professional and dependable
Ability to work in a fast paced environment under pressure, able to multi-task and is results-oriented
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
Effective time management and prioritization skills
Requires discretion and independent judgment in the interpretation of approved policies and methods in relation to personnel on a day-to-day basis for all employees
Very high degree of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public, including tact to handle sensitive matters
Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
